Carnivorous Plants Defined

car·niv·o·rous

Pronunciation: \kär-ˈni-v(ə-)rəs\

Function: adjective

Etymology: Latin carnivorus, from carn-, caro + -vorus -vorous

Date: 1592

1 : subsisting or feeding on animal tissues
2 of a plant : subsisting on nutrients obtained from the breakdown of animal protoplasm (as of insects)

New addition

New Venus Flytrap

Addition to the family

This is a new addition to my carnivorous collection. This was a good buy in that the pot has three in one. I did have the opportunity to educate the clerk at the garden center.
She didn't know that Venus Flytraps only have two to three shots at catching an insect with their trap and if they don't
the trap fades and dies. The plant will grow a new trap to take
its place. The moral of this story is if you have a Venus Flytrap
let it catch its own food.

It is interesting to see how the plants put their method of
reproduction(in the form of a flower) high about its trap
mechanism.

Plant Division

Carnivorous plants divide just like iris rhizomes. The rhizome
is divided and as long as it has a growth tip it will grow a new
plant. The Sarracenia seems to be the stronger of the plants
I grow.

Sarracenia

— is a genus comprising 8 to 11 species of North American pitcher plants. The genus belongs to the family Sarraceniaceae, which also contain the closely allied genera Darlingtonia and Heliamphora.

— The insects are attracted by a nectar-like secretion on the lip of pitchers, as well as a combination of color and scent. Slippery footing at the pitchers' rim, aided in at least one species by a narcotic drug lacing the nectar, causes insects to fall inside, where they die and are digested by the plant as a nutrient source.

Sarracenia Care and planting

— Sarracenia requires little care once planted.

— It needs moist even stand water.

— Rain water is best or distilled never use tap water it contains too many salts and chemicals.

— Use 3 to 1 ratio of peat moss to river sand

— Sarracenia does like to attract it’s own nutrients in the prey it catches.

— It is best to allow water to drain off or provide a away for it to cycle through.
